Planning Responsibly

Beginning in the Fall of 2022, the Banks School District worked alongside Banks community members to resume working on a plan to address long term issues with the high school and other buildings on campus. This began with doing an updated assessment of the condition of the current buildings, and the conclusions were dire.

A plan was created to address the issues identified in the assessment that would prioritize the health and safety concerns of the district as well as the costly failing infrastructure. This plan was phased in order to bring the cost down to levels that the community can afford, and to prevent disruption to the students while construction is in progress.

If the voters approve the bond, the school district will appoint a community led Bond Accountability Committee to ensure that the community continues to have a voice in the construction process and ensure responsible use of bond funds.

There are multiple unsafe buildings and areas on campus
There are failing building systems
There is inadequate physical security protection
There are inadequate and non-compliant classrooms and facilities for current curriculum and regulatory compliance

Prioritizing Health and Safety

Projects that the bond will fund will address some key health and safety issues.
  • Structural Safety.   There are several unsafe buildings and areas on campus. There will be seismic upgrades and roof repairs across the district, and a new, safe, high school building.
  • Unhealthy Environments.  Student and staff are learning and working in spaces with leaky roofs, mold, heating, cooling, and ventilation issues.
  • Accessibility. Not all students are able to access critical parts of our campus.
  • Campus traffic flow. Current traffic conditions are dangerous for students
  • Physical Security Vulnerabilities.  The school needs to be updated to modern safety standards.

The bond will be used to create a new two story high school building. In addition to addressing the health and safety concerns with the old structure, this will replace most of the learning spaces at the high school. The new building will attach to existing facilities and reuse the areas that are still functional.
